A very important part of our mission and purpose at Long's Chapel is to deploy servants who transform the world. We accomplish this by meeting practical needs in our community, country and around the world.
Locally you can: Volunteer for a work team during Mission Haywood week (July 17-22, 2017)Participate in gleaning Help Prison Ministries write cards to inmates on special occasions Donate items to the collection of the month for Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes Volunteer with Christmas Angels ministry Give blood at the Long's Chapel Blood Drives twice a year (next drive is Jul. 11, 2017, 8am-7pm) Vounteer with the Martin Luther King Jr event planning committee Be a part of Prison/Jail Ministries Facilitate or mentor men and women participating at LifeWorks for life and job skills Be an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher Help build a Habitat House Tutor students Provide backpacks and school supplies for students in need Cook at the Open Door in Waynesville or at the Community Kitchen in Canton Deliver Meals on Wheels to shut-ins Visit homebound folks at home or in nursing facilities and retirement communities Volunteer at the Good Samaritan Medical Clinic Cut and deliver firewood to folks in need Become the voice for a child by serving in the 30th District Guardian ad Litem Assist in one of the elementary school Bible clubs Become an ally to help fight poverty with the Circles of Hope Program in Haywood County Join United Methodist Women helping to equip women and girls around the world to become leaders in communities, workplaces, governments, and churches. The UMW put their faith into action by working for justice through compassionate service and advocacy to change unfair policies and systems and providing resources to grow spiritually and to become more deeply rooted in Christ. We currently have 7 links/groups at Long's Chapel so there should be a time that meets your schedule.Join a group to clean and do minor construction at the Pigeon Multi-cultural Center.Prepare a meal for the Alternative Learning Center in Hazelwood.Join our Knitting Ministries and make prayer shawls for the sick.
Outside our community you can:Be a part of the mission trips this summer for youth.Help sort medical packs, birthing kits, disaster relief items in Mooresville, NC at the UMCOR Center.Travel to the Redbird Mission in Kentucky to work with other volunteers and staff to provide services to the underserved population in the Appalachian mountains.Get involved with Western Carolina University Wesley Foundation students or UNCA Wesley Foundation students by preparing exam packs, purchasing/preparing meals for Wesley Foundation weekly meetings, leading a study on campus, attending one of their missional events where musicians are encouraged to give time and talent, inviting them to be part of your mission projects or to speak to your group about what they are doing, and much more. Throughout the world you can:Serve on a mission team.With your gifts, you can support programs that bring clean water and food to underserved countries.Provide financial support to UMC Misssionaries who serve in many countries.Send a birthday wish to our missionary friends on their birthday.
